In this camp, students in grades 4–6 will explore reading and writing in a fun and creative way! They will read engaging books, talk about stories, and try out many types of writing.
Schedule
Book Fun & Academic Writing
• Discuss the assigned book: story, characters, themes, and writing style
• Participate in fun group and individual activities to practice writing clearly and thoughtfully
Break – Short Rest and Refresh
Creative Writing
• Explore different creative writing forms: short stories, poetry, and personal essays
• Learn to use vivid language, experiment with different sentence styles, and edit your own writing
• By the end of the camp, each student will have completed at least two pieces in each type of writing

In this camp, students will prepare for the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards by exploring a different type of writing each week. Students will learn how to develop ideas, write with stronger voice and style, and create polished pieces that are ready to submit to the competition.

Writing Workshop
• Study examples from a Scholastic-winning piece or mentor text
• Learn the features of the week’s writing genre
• Discuss ideas, structure, theme, and effective language
• Brainstorm and plan an original piece
Break – Short Rest and Refresh
Drafting & Revision
• Write the first draft during class
• Receive step-by-step guidance and individual feedback
• Revise for stronger details, organization, and word choice
• Edit grammar, sentence variety, and clarity
• Practice peer-review and workshop techniques
